Panchayat Raj is an innovative experiment in the making of modern India. The Balwant Rai Mehta Committee has recommended a three-tier Panchayat Raj system to involve the rural people in rural development. Accordingly, the Maharashtra Government passed the Maharashtra Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti Act, 1961 on 1 May 1962 And a three-tier Panchayat Raj was established with Zilla Parishad at the district level, Panchayat Samiti at the group level and Gram Panchayat at the village level. Nashik Zilla Parishad was established on 1 May 1962. Today, 15 Panchayat Samiti and 1,373 Gram Panchayats are working for the development of rural areas. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment has given women participation in power and the Gram Sabha has given more powers to the Gram Panchayats. Nashik Zilla Parishad has always been at the forefront in implementing any new scheme, project, or campaign of the government.
