School Nutrition Scheme
Start of the Scheme:
School Nutrition Scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme and the scheme has been implemented in the state since 22 November 1995. Initially, under this scheme, 3 kg of free rice was provided to students of classes 1 to 5 per month.
In the year 2001, the Hon’ble Supreme Court ordered that under the School Nutrition Scheme, students should be given cooked food in schools instead of dry rice and accordingly from the year 2002, the form of this scheme was changed and instead of giving rice at home, students are given cooked food in schools. In the year 2008, this scheme was expanded and students of classes 6 to 8 are also given the benefit of this scheme.
Regarding the amendment of the School Nutrition Scheme, it was notified to be implemented from 1 July 2010 as per the Government Decision No. Shapoa/2009/Prakr 136/Rashi4/ dated 18/6/2009 As per the decision of the Central Government, rice and other food grains like pulses, oil, salt, onion, garlic, spices, turmeric, mustard etc. are supplied to schools in rural areas. Whereas in urban areas, rice is transported to schools or schools are supplied to the extent that they have adopted a central kitchen. At present, the supply of goods is done through the Maharashtra State Co-op Consumers Federation.
As per the guidelines given by the government, there are orders from the Central Government to use the central kitchen system in urban areas. It has been found that some renowned NGOs in the state have established central kitchens in rural areas and are supplying good food in some areas. Therefore, guidelines have been issued to adopt the central kitchen system and supply school nutrition wherever possible in rural areas.
Proposals have been invited from NGOs for consideration of the said instructions. The said institutions should provide food as per the required quantity and as per the prescribed menu to enhance the quality of school nutrition and along with it, vegetables like spinach, fenugreek, tomato, potato, green pea, ghewda, tondale, carrot, cauliflower, cabbage etc. should be included as per the availability at the local level. Also, instructions have been given to provide supplementary food like soya biscuits, milk, rajgira ladoo, jaggery, peanuts, raisins every Wednesday.
